Laura Halvorson is a native Texan from the Dallas area. From a young age, she has had the desire to help others and make the world a better place. When she was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at age 15, this only furthered her desire to help others, especially those with disabilities. She has a Masters in Special Education from Texas Woman’s University and is certified as an Educational Diagnostician. Laura served as department head of her school’s special education program in Mesquite ISD where she taught kindergarten-5th-grade resource, content mastery, and dyslexia intervention classes.

With knowledge and experience of laws and the rights of people with disabilities from advocating for students in ARD/IEP meetings, she plans on educating and empowering others with disabilities across the great state of Texas. She now spends her extra time as the Program Director of Camp Craig Allen where she coordinates camp programs and their wheelchair hockey league. Camp Craig Allen is a 501(c)3 for adults, children and Veterans with physical disabilities that encourages self-awareness, positive influence, and independence in therapeutic and educational programs in an accessible environment that promotes abilities and talents of those with the most physical challenges.

Laura’s passion for advocacy and education aligns perfectly with the missions of Camp Craig Allen and the Ms. Wheelchair Texas organization. She feels honored to be a part of this experience and will proudly represent the Ms. Wheelchair Texas organization as a 2014 titleholder.
